The Spotlight's On: Alison Piepmeier

Getting to Know You:

Name:  Alison Piepmeier

Blog Name and URL:  “Every little thing” (www.alisonpiepmeier.blogspot.com).  I also used to have a blog called “Baxter Sez” (www.piepmeier.blogspot.com).

Blogger or Wordpress?  Blogger

Favorite widget or plugin?  Oh, I don’t think I’m cool enough to have an answer to that question.

What’s one thing that people don’t know about you?  I feel like I’ll talk about anything on my blog!  But people probably don’t know that cold cereal is my very favorite food of all.  Mmm, I wish I were eating some right now.

While we are at it, what’s your theme song?  “Groove Is In the Heart,” by De La Soul.

Dish you would bring to our community picnic:  Chocolate chip cookies.  Or maybe fudge pie—I don’t love fudge pie, but everybody else does.

On Blogging:

What got you blogging and what keeps you going?  I started blogging because my then-husband and I lived in different states, and we’d moved away from the state where our families live (Tennessee).  The blog was a place to share what Charleston was like, and then for us to keep in touch with each other while Walter was finishing his last year of graduate school.  What keeps me going is the fact that I love blogging.  It’s a place where I can get my ideas out in an informal, non-academic way.  And I can get feedback and create a community.

One post (that you wrote) that makes you laugh? “Bitchmother” was a pretty funny one (and it includes an illegally posted picture from the fantastic zine, The East Village Inky, by Ayun Halliday):  http://alisonpiepmeier.blogspot.com/2013/02/bitchmother.html

One post you are really proud of, for whatever reason?  This is an old post, from 2006 on “Baxter Sez,” called “Hairy-Legged Feminist” (http://piepmeier.blogspot.com/2006/05/hairy-legged-feminist.html).  The byline is Biffle, but I wrote it.  It has nothing to do with Down syndrome.  People love it.  I’m proud of it as much as anything for the impact it’s had.  We don’t talk nearly enough in mainstream American culture about the possibility of letting your body hair grow.

How have you seen your blog/blogging style change and how would you like to see it develop?  My blog has become a little more focused on Down syndrome and disability studies, as well as reproductive justice—the topics I’m researching right now.  I don’t want that to become the focus of my blogging, though.  I appreciate the blog because it’s a site where I can articulate and explore anything I want to.  I gave the new blog the name “Every little thing” because I want it to be a space for whatever I’m interested in.

Two blogs you love to read and why?  I love “a moon worn as if it had been a shell” (http://elizabethaquino.blogspot.com), a blog by Elizabeth Aquino who is a fantastic writer.  Her daughter has epilepsy, and that’s something she blogs about quite a bit, but she also blogs about politics, food, parenting, poetry—I always enjoy going over there.  Another I really enjoy is “Viva la Feminista” (http://www.vivalafeminista.com).  Veronica Arreola is a scholar, activist, and mom, and she’s becoming a bigger and bigger name online!

Where else can we find you online?

Oh, my—here’s a list of options:

·        “Choosing to Have a Child with Down Syndrome” on the NYTimes Motherlode blog (http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/02/choosing-to-have-a-child-with-down-syndrome/)
·        “Outlawing Abortion Won’t Help Children with Down Syndrome” (http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/01/outlawing-abortion-wont-help-children-with-down-syndrome/)
·        “Girl w/Pen” (http://thesocietypages.org/girlwpen/)

The Spotlight's On: Stephanie Meredith, Nancy Ionnone and Missy Skavlem of Down syndrome Pregnancy

Getting to Know You:

Name: Stephanie Meredith, Nancy Iannone, and Missy Kline Skavlem

Blog Name and URL: Down Syndrome Pregnancy, downsyndromepregnancy.org

Blogger or Wordpress? Wordpress

Favorite widget or plugin? Google Analytics

What’s one thing that people don’t know about you? Managed the translation of “Babies with Down Syndrome” into Russian and travelled to Russia in 2011 as a US Speaker on Down syndrome. Best experience ever! (https://www.facebook.com/pages/To-Russia-With-Love/193126564089443?fref=ts)

While we are at it, what’s your theme song? Mumford and Sons “After the Storm” –
Nancy and Stephanie’s favorite band

Dish you would bring to our community picnic: Raspberry Trifle

On Blogging:

What got you blogging and what keeps you going?

I have worked as a technical writer since 1997 and worked as the Assistant Editor for Patricia Bauer’s Disability New Blog (www.patriciaebauer.com) from May 2008-December 2009. Nancy and Missy had been providing live support at BabyCenter for years and wanted a place where information
could be consolidated in a meaningful way.

Then, Nancy, Missy, and I launched Down Syndrome Pregnancy, along with our book “Diagnosis to Delivery: A Pregnant Mother’s Guide to Down Syndrome,” in 2010. Our point was to provide information and support to expectant moms in a “safe forum.” One of my best moments was a couple of weeks ago when I met a mom from Kansas City who told us our books, blog, and discussion board
were her lifeline during her pregnancy. It’s amazing to know that we’re helping people
across the country.

One post (that you wrote) that makes you laugh?

Ours don’t tend to be funny since it’s not a platform for our personal expression. It’s more about providing information and sharing perspectives. But I loved the comments generated by this post: http://downsyndromepregnancy.org/diagnosis-day-parents-what-would-you-say-to-your-past-self/
I love reading the comments generated by the posts and the different perspectives shared
from other moms among each other. Please add yours!

One post you are really proud of, for whatever reason?

I’m really proud of the medical outreach program that is now used by more than 65 local Down syndrome organizations nationwide: http://downsyndromepregnancy.org/down-syndrome-prenatal-outreach-program/

I also think Nancy’s identification of research gaps for Down syndrome pregnancies is
incredibly important and will hopefully motivate more research into best practices for
pregnancies as the new non-invasive prenatal testing becomes more prevalent: http://downsyndromepregnancy.org/research-gaps-down-syndrome-pregnancy/

How have you seen your blog/blogging style change and how would you like to see it develop?

I want the blog to become a more topical column within a website and to wrap the other informational parts of our blog into a website format with more photos and more modern design. We’re hoping to get this done in the very near future.

Two blogs you love to read and why?
http://www.mystubbornmiss.com by Megan Landmeier (Love reading about Ellie and
Megan, who was one of “our moms.”)
http://www.downsyndromeprenataltesting.com/
http://www.patheos.com/blogs/thinplaces/
http://alisonpiepmeier.blogspot.com/
http://thednaexchange.com/tag/genetic-counseling/
www.brianskotko.com

Where else can we find you online?
www.lettercase.org as the author of “Understanding a Ds Diagnosis”
www.downsyndromediagnosis.org as the Medical Outreach Director of the University of
Kentucky’s Human Development Institute
Gifts and Gifts 2: http://www.amazon.com/Gifts-People-Syndrome-Enrich-World/dp/1890627968
www.patriciaebauer.com
http://yomammamamma.blogspot.com/ (Missy Skavlem)
http://community.babycenter.com/groups/a14515/down_syndrome_pregnancy?
Lots of software blogs, user manuals, and websites you’ll probably never want to read.

Down Syndrome Pregnancy is now part of the National Center for Prenatal and Postnatal Down Syndrome Resources at the University of Kentucky’s Human Development Institute.

The National Center includes Lettercase, Down Syndrome Pregnancy, and Brighter Tomorrows. I work as the Lettercase Program/Medical Outreach Director at the university, and Missy and Nancy still volunteer for the blog and the BabyCenter board. All products are free digitally, and all proceeds for print materials are used to support the programs.

The Spotlight's On: Tara McCallan of The Happy Soul Project

Getting to Know You:

Name:  Tara McCallan or t as everyone calls me...
Blog Name and URL: Happy Soul Project- http://www.happysoulproject.com/
Blogger or Wordpress?  Blogger but constantly wonder if Wordpress or another platform is better...
Favorite widget or plugin? Hmmm I don’t have too many on my blog- but love seeing what blogs make my 10 most popular post...Interesting to see...
Dish you would bring to our community picnic: Since I don’t cook, I’d either be getting my hubs to make his delish potato salad or I’d be stopping at a bakery for dessert...

On Blogging:

What got you blogging and what keeps you going?  Lovely question & I address this exact one at http://www.happysoulproject.com/2012/02/day-one-why-pin-me-blog.html - But to summarize;
  1. My love of writing
  2. I’m an open book so might as well write about it
  3. My world changed when I had my hooligans- The blog documents my 20 month old son Noal’s life & my start in Mummy~Hood & also shares our journey with Down syndrome when my daughter Reid was born just a few months ago.
  4. Pinterest & the accountability it forced on me...I didn’t want to portray that I was actually the person who did things I “pinned” without taking the time/effort to at least try, create, make or do them...
  5. Pass something on in life...

One post that makes you laugh?  Hmmm probably my entire page dedicated to Operation Ellen- My hubs challenged me to try & get Ellen’s attention when I first started the blog...He truly thinks there is absolutely NO chance & has even stated that he would get a much despised tattoo if I do...Taking the challenge on I have made a fool of myself with videos, photos & annoying blog post to try & get her attention...No such luck yet- But I have hope..

One post you are really proud of, for whatever reason?
It took awhile to share exactly what I was feeling when we first found out Reid had Down syndrome- this post is my heart, raw to the core... http://www.happysoulproject.com/2012/12/life-is-beautiful-because-reid-layne-is.html

How have you seen your blog/blogging style change and how would you like to see it develop?
The blog has changed completely...What started out as “Pin Me” t...has now become Happy Soul Project- You can read more about how/why the change was needed on the blog & in my life...
As for the blog’s development- I would absolutely love to work with a web/graphic designer to help create what I dream for the blog to look like but lack technical skills to actually do...

The Spotlight's On: Little Bird's Dad

Name: Little Bird's Dad (I blog anonymously, for a variety of reasons.  On the T21 alliance FB Group, I use my middle name, Francis.

Blog Name and URL:  Little Bird's Dad:  www.littlebirdsdad.com

Blogger or Wordpress?  Wordpress.com

Favorite widget or plugin?  Wordpress.com doesn't let us use plugins and I'm still learning how to use widgets. If I could use plugins, my favorite would be Google Analytics plug-ins.  The information on Google Analytics enabled me to transform the reach and influence of my work blog, a blog for the specific type of law that I do in my day job.

Dish you would bring to our community picnic:  Homemade spaghetti and meatballs, using the recipe that our family has used every Sunday since time began, I think. (We call it macaroni and sauce, though).

What got you blogging and what keeps you going?  I started blogging to process some of what I was experiencing as a 40-something dad with a newborn baby diagnosed at birth with DS.
What keeps me going is the freedom of writing what I want, how I want, when I want, and sometimes having a dialogue grow out of it.

One post that makes you laugh? This was a tough one. When I go back and read my post "Schedule versus Routine: which is which", I laugh when I think about the day my wife and I had the "sign" battle over napping and playing.

One post you are really proud of, for whatever reason?
"The sound of terror"  is my favorite post, so far.  When I read that Ethan Saylor's last words were "I want my Mommy", my heart cracked in 2.  It breaks my heart to think of someone in that much terror that they cry out such a primal plea for help and mercy.  The idea that someone's child could die in such a state of fear cuts me to the core.

I wanted to try to help others experience become aware of the intensity of his last moments; I believe that change only comes when powerful emotions  have nowhere else to go.

How have you seen your blog/blogging style change and how would you like to see it develop?
I am still working to find a voice for the blog.  I am open to ideas - from anyone and everyone.
I would like the sketches to take a more central role in the blog, too.
I even turned one of the doodles into a Note Card, and I'll be offering them on the blog in the next few weeks.

Where else can we find you online?
You can find Little Bird's Dad in a couple places:

1) Facebook: Reposting stories about people with DS in the news, with a theme of "We Can Do That, Too!"
2) Pinterest (still trying to figure out the best way to use this creative platform)
3) Twitter: (never really got this platform, but Little Bird is on it)
4) May start using Google+1, LinkedIn, and other platforms, if the blog grows.

The Spotlight's On: Carrie Roberts of Celebrating Life As We Know It

Getting to Know You:

Name: Carrie Roberts

Blog Name and URL
: Life As We Know It
www.celebratinglifeasweknowit.blogspot.com

Blogger or Wordpress? Blogger

Favorite widget or plugin?
I love the ones that show you where people are coming from all over the world. The best is when I see certain obscure cities pop up and I know exactly who it is from that city that is reading my blog. Makes me feel like my far-away friends and family are even closer.

Dish you would bring to our community picnic:
Carmel Apple Cheesecake Bars. Although they might all get eaten in the car on the way to the picnic.

On Blogging:

What got you blogging and what keeps you going?
I started blogging as a way to keep in touch with family and friends that live far away. Now it’s more of an online scrapbook/journal of our lives.

One post that makes you laugh?
The one about my children creating major chaos and of course my husband was out of town. It really was like a scene from a slapstick-family-comedy movie.

http://celebratinglifeasweknowit.blogspot.com/2010/07/10-minutes-at-my-house.html

One post you are really proud of, for whatever reason?
The one about the day I found out I had a large brain tumor and needed major brain surgery. I wrote it while the news was still fresh and didn’t do any editing and it turned out just like it should have.

http://celebratinglifeasweknowit.blogspot.com/2012/09/other-medical-adventures-meningioma.html

How have you seen your blog/blogging style change and how would you like to see it
develop?

I used to think that I needed to blog everything about our lives. And then, after
my daughter with Down syndrome was born, I felt like I really needed to be an advocacy
blogger and have everything on my blog be about Down syndrome. Now, I just write
when I want to write about whatever I want to write about—Down syndrome, my family,
craft projects, being a mom…just whatever. Over time, I want it to portray a full picture
of our lives; the good, the bad, the funny, the drama…a complete smattering. It’s getting
there, but a lot of times I don’t write about things in our lives simply because I run out of time. Right now, when someone in the future reads about our lives they might think that all we do is hang out in hospitals or celebrate holidays.

Where else can we find you online?

The Spotlight's On: Kate of Trial Run

Name:  Kate (krlr)

Blog Name and URL:  Trial Run  at http://krlr-trialrun.blogspot.com

Blogger or Wordpress?
Blogger.  I looked at Wordpress but I can barely turn the computer on, much less wade thru HTML coding.

Favorite widget or plugin?  Favorite Wi-who? What?

What’s one thing that people don’t know about you?  How about two?  I was a gun toting police officer for exactly 4 weeks a long, long time ago.  And I paid for my last two years of college working on a salmon tender in Alaska.  Now I work in a cubicle.  Life is funny like that.

While we are at it, what’s your theme song?  Hmmm.  I love everything from Neil Diamond to Eminem.  My favorite running song is Melissa Etheridge's I Run for Life.  I know it's about breast cancer but I can't help but think about my girl - the scar on her chest from her heart surgery, the darkness when we first learned about her little extra, & not giving up.  The last few lines:  ...And someday if they tell you about it, if the darkness knocks on your door, remember her, remember me..."  Chokes me up, every time.  I hope new moms with unexpected news see my girl and our life and take comfort.  Hopefully I won't be complaining about work that day.

Dish you would bring to our community picnic:
Um, yeah.  I don't really cook.  I'd bring chocolate, wine, cheese, & bread.  Carbs, fat, sugar, & booze make everything better. Oh, and coffee.  Vats and vats of coffee.

On Blogging:

What got you blogging and what keeps you going? /How have you seen your blog/blogging style change and how would you like to see it develop?

Ha!  I didn't actually start till my daughter was almost 2, so I don't fall into that New Baby! With Ds! category.  I just wanted a place to post pictures for my grandmother (Gigi) and the rest of the family.  I started adding little explanatory captions, the captions got longer, and then I used the space for some weirdly long, completely inane rants about random things.  I did everything "wrong" but still managed to find some fabulous kindred souls online that are now dear real life friends.  I keep writing because it amuses me, sometimes it's a quiet place to vent, and because of this community.  And because Gigi still expects her pictures.

One post that makes you laugh?
What's a little threat of violence?  http://krlr-trialrun.blogspot.com/2012/10/is-it-still-october-1st.html

One post you are really proud of, for whatever reason?
Shortest post ever:  http://krlr-trialrun.blogspot.com/2012/10/1731-one-flower-five-leaves.html

My long sad tale:  http://krlr-trialrun.blogspot.com/2011/04/april-6th.html

Where else can we find you online?

Nowhere!  I just joined Facebook last year, am not crafty enough for Pintrest, and try to remain un-Googleable for work.  I am, however, a Words with Friends slut and have lots of anonymous games going.  Mobile user KRLR, if any of y'all are looking for some action.

Two blogs you love to read and why?  Jeez!  Just two?  I'm going to pick two non-Ds/non-mommy blogs because I love so MANY of you, I'd hate to play favorites:
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html  Good reminder that most of my troubles are unimportant on this pale blue dot.
http://www.postsecret.com  Good reminder that "troubles" are relative.

The Spotlight's On: Amber Malmberg of This is My Life...and This is Joy!

Name: Amber Malmberg
Blog: This is My Life...and This is Joy! www.malmbergjoys.blogspot.com
Blogger or Wordpress? Blogger user.

Favorite Widget?
LinkWithin! (http://www.linkwithin.com/learn?ref=widget)

One thing that people don’t know about me?
I’m terrified of clowns. No seriously, it’s BAD. I would even go as far to say
that I have Coulrophobia. But for that matter I also have Arachnophobia. I’m
embarrassed by how ridiculous I act when I see a spider. I try my darndest to keep
calm about it. I don’t want my kids to imitate mom! I have even had to call my
husband to come home from work one day(which he could do…it’s not like he had to
clock in or out or anything…sheesh I’m not crazy!) because there was a GINORMOUS
spider on the ceiling above the front door. I was trapped!

And I may or may not have had my 4 year-old nephew vacuum-up a spider in my
house ‘cuz I just couldn’t do it. And I may or may not have left the vacuum outside
for my husband to deal with, after the deed was done, because we all know spiders
can crawl back out right!?

My theme song?
Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel
That song’s totally about me!!! No I’m being sarcastic, I’m not that conceited, It just
gets me dancing and simply happy…no matter what!

Dish I would bring to our community picnic?
Probably a Little Caesars Pizza…Yes, I’ve totally done that! But I’d also bring a
dessert, so then everything will be okay, right?!

What got me blogging?
Family. Mine grew. My husband and I started our family, and then my entire family
reads it. My dad. My mom. Siblings. etc. They all read it, and check it probably
daily. I would say it’s them that keep me going!

One post I wrote that makes me laugh?
http://malmbergjoys.blogspot.com/search?q=crazy+town

One post I’m really proud of?
http://malmbergjoys.blogspot.com/2013/02/inclusion-for-children-with-down.html

My blogging style has definitely changed. I think it’s become more personal. I’m
more honest. It’s become a journal. I think its because I’m invested in it. I’ve
become a fan of it myself. And that comment isn’t me being vain. It’s me being
totally surprised, on a daily basis; with the way my life is turning-out! I grew-up
with a lot of ideas and expectations about how my life will be. Fantasies really! I’m
just such a planner-always have been, and this blog reminds me that I’m not the
mapmaker to my life. I’m Amber, and I’m supposed to enjoy it!

I would love to see my blog develop. And I’m not above admitting that comments
keep me going-that a growing audience keeps me going, and that I love being
surrounded by people who relate to me, whom I can relate to, to those whom I can’t,
and to those who inspire me every day!

Two blogs that I personally love to read are:

You know, I can’t answer that. I don’t want to have a favorite. I read so many
peoples blogs, and I favor them all. I love to be surrounded by posts that are
inspiring, thought provoking, and honest. And I like the variety. That’s probably my
favorite part!

The Spotlight's On: Lisa Morguess of Life As I Know It

NameLisa Morguess

Blog Name and URL:  Life As I Know It; http://lisamorguess.com

Blogger or Wordpress?
Wordpress (self hosted).  I started out at Blogger, but found it limiting, although in some ways easier to use than Wordpress.  Overall, I’ve been very happy with Wordpress; for some reason, I feel like my blog has more street cred with WP than it did with Blogger.  Which makes no sense, I know.

Favorite widget or plugin?
That is a difficult question to answer for someone who is technically illiterate.   Umm, I like the Shareaholic plugin, and the Statigram plugin.  I’m sure there are more awesome ones, but there you go.

What’s one thing that people don’t know about you?
I pee in the shower?  My boobs are two different sizes?  Sorry, a bunch of things are coming to mind that are probably inappropriate and TMI, so let me think . . . Okay, here’s one: I took painting lessons as a teenager and did a couple of pretty darn good oil paintings.  One of them I gave to my dad, and haven’t seen hide nor hair of it in 30 years, and the other is proudly displayed in my dining room and wows my children on a regular basis.

While we are at it, what’s your theme song?
“Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake.  Don’t laugh.

Dish you would bring to our community picnic:
Probably a red velvet cake from the store.  Or Cheetos.

On Blogging:

What got you blogging and what keeps you going?
I’ve been a journaler since I was a kid.  When blogging took the nation by storm, it was a natural evolution for me.  Journaling for an audience definitely serves some narcissistic purpose, and it’s a way to feel connected in our rather disconnected culture.  My first blog was a typical “mommy blog” – I wrote about boring day-to-day happenings and thoughts and complaints, and only a handful of friends even knew about it.  I had no interest in growing an audience – it was really just a place to write and get a miniscule amount of feedback.

Then Finn was born.  He was born at home and when he was less than a day old, we had to rush him to the ER because he was spitting up blood.  He ended up having surgery to correct an intestinal atresia he was born with, spent two weeks in the NICU, and it was during that time that we learned he has Down syndrome.   I was shellshocked, exhausted, and just sort of floundering, and I had all these people wanting to know what was going on.  I couldn’t bear all the phone calls and emails, so I impulsively started a blog, Finnian’s Journey (http://finniansjourney.blogspot.com) as a means to have a central place where family and friends could stay up-to-date on what was going on with Finn, how he was doing, etc.  It became my nightly ritual to write there when I came home from the NICU – it was cathartic to pour out my thoughts and feelings.  I had no idea that there was a whole community of parents of kids with Ds out there who also blogged, and that slowly they would stumble across my humble blog and welcome me into the fold.  I made some wonderful connections through that blog, many of which remain strong today.

After about two years of blogging at Finnian’s Journey, I realized that Down syndrome no longer occupied center stage for me or for our family.  So I retired Finnian’s Journey (although it still exists for anyone to see) and started Life As I Know It, where I write not only about Down syndrome, but a plethora of other things that are meaningful to me, as well.

One post (that you wrote) that makes you laugh?
Here’s one: Middle Aged & Knocked Up: Pros and Cons (http://www.lisamorguess.com/2011/11/04/middle-aged-knocked-up-pros-and-cons/)  I wrote this shortly after finding myself very unexpectedly pregnant with my seventh baby at the age of 44.

One post you are really proud of, for whatever reason?
It’s difficult to choose just one!  The posts I am most proud of are the ones in which I said something important that resonated with other people.  Here is one: Selling Down Syndrome (http://www.lisamorguess.com/2012/10/15/down-syndrome-awareness-selling-down-syndrome/)

How have you seen your blog/blogging style change and how would you like to see it develop?
I think I’ve just become a better writer over time.  I think the more my readership has grown and the more blogs I’ve been exposed to, the more I’ve been inspired and motivated to be the best writer I can be – not only technically speaking, but writing about things that matter to me, writing from the heart, with authenticity.  How would I like to see it develop?  Well, I’d like for some agent to discover me and offer me a book deal or a columnist gig, of course!

Two blogs you love to read and why?
Not That You Asked (http://not-that-you-asked.blogspot.com) and The Garden of My Heart (http://gardenofmyheart.wordpress.com) because they are both beautiful writers who don’t get nearly enough attention.

Where else can we find you online?
Facebook, Twitter (though I don’t use it, but my blog posts feed up to my Twitter account), Instagram, Pinterest . . . you name it.  I get around.  I can be found by my name on all of those sites.

The Spotlight's On: Carolyn Montonati of Light and Shadow

Name:  Carolyn Montonati

Blog NameLight and Shadow

Blogger or Wordpress?  Wordpress.
com

Favorite widget or plugin?

I like the blog roll widget the best.  I use it on the blogs I read and try to include the best blogs on my roll to give my readers some quality reading.

What’s one thing that people don’t know about you?

If you only knew me from FB and my blog, I don't think you would know that I'm less than 5' tall.  I tried to get the nurse at my doctor's office to round up, but she wouldn't.

While we are at it, what’s your theme song?

It's the name of my blog! "Light and Shadow" by The David Crowder Band.  This song means so much to me, about how I feel about  the two main themes of my life: Jack Jack's diagnosis, life in Afghanistan.  My very first post explained it http://carolynm516.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/hello-world/

Dish you would bring to our community picnic:

I wish we could have a community picnic!  I would bring home made bread and jam and an awesome chicken salad that has grapes and bacon in it.

On Blogging:

What got you blogging and what keeps you going?

I was reading so many great blogs about Down syndrome and I totally jumped on the bandwagon.  I thought I have stuff I want to say to my circle of friends and family and a blog would be a good forum for it.  We were considering a move back to Afghanistan and I thought it would be a good way to talk about that, keep people updated and explain to a wider forum just what the heck we were up to.  Also, I hate scrap booking and feel vaguely guilty about that.  So, the blog is also a way to keep a record of our life, with photos, that does not require any cutting and pasting on my part.

One post (that you wrote) that makes you laugh?

http://carolynm516.wordpress.com/2012/04/19/the-vacation-that-wasnt/
I was so upset over our ruined vacation, so writing in a sarcastic tone took some of the sting out, and Tara gave me my first LOL comment on it.

One post you are really proud of, for whatever reason?

I was really nervous about hitting publish on this one.  I stand by it, and still feel very strongly about this subject, and am proud of it, as it really did change some hearts and minds.  Also, a few people in the Down syndrome world admitted to not being sure they would like me, clearly being one more Christian mommy blog and they found this post surprising and refreshing.

How have you seen your blog/blogging style change and how would you like to see it develop?

I don't know that I've been blogging long enough to see a style change, but I would like it to develop.  I've spent more time recently reading blogs of other expat women, knowing that when we move to Afghanistan, it tone will change.  I'd like to be braver and wade into discussions on disability in America, but right now I feel that so many others in our community do a better job at it.

Two blogs you love to read and why?

Only two??  I love blogs, so this is a hard one!
Ds:  http://pudgeandzippy.blogspot.com/  I love everything about this blog and Courtney.  Her writing.  Her photos.  Her matter of fact, irreverent style.  I remember clearly, sitting in my parents' home, weeks after diagnosis, with tears streaming down my face.  Jack Jack was just about a month old and it was October -- Ds Awareness month and it was killing me!

I didn't want to be AWARE.  And I clicked on Pudge and Biggs.  Courtney had written something like "today's Down syndrome fact is that kids with Down syndrome get the flu.  Here's hoping tomorrows fact isn't that they share the flu with their siblings."  Through the tears and the snot, I laughed.  And I felt something loosen up in my chest.  That was a real turning point in my emotional well being.

Non Ds: http://www.rantsfrommommyland.com/  If you don't read Rants from Mommyland, you should!  Never read with a mouth full of coffee.  The posts about Randy the Laundry Fairy are worth every minute.  Good writing, funny and occasionally poignant and a tear jerker.

I have a pinterest account but given my abhorrence for all things crafty and needing scissors, I don't get on there very much. Mostly to see if Lexi Sweatpants has pinned anything funny, but if you want, I'm there at carolynm516

Blogger or Wordpress? Wordpress.com

Favorite widget or plugin? None. But my favorite tool is Dropbox

What’s one thing that people don’t know about you?
Depends which people? I am a person of many well defended compartments so I suspect that most people only know a certain amount. How about : I dearly love horses but never really have spent much time with them.

While we are at it, what’s your theme song? Sand and Water by Beth Nielsen Chapman, or Everybody Knows by Leonard Cohen

Dish you would bring to our community picnic: hmmmmm.... Quinoa salad or darn good chili, or I could make my Memeres Meat pies if I was well rested and ambitious, make some apple pies?

On Blogging:

What got you blogging and what keeps you going?
I went through a very personal crisis about 7 years ago and in my quest for understanding I turned towards resources online. I got hooked on the validation and hood of  anonymous support and started reading and then finally blogging myself.

As that phase of my life resolved, I expanded my interests, explored and with the 6 degree of separation concept-One idea/issue/blog at a time. I learned about computers and enjoyed the challenge and autonomy, the freedom and flex of it all. I remembered that I loved writing and was surprised to find that there were other people who liked to read what I wrote!

Then I exhausted that blog and the trolls and spam of Blogger and abandoned it to start again with a new combo of readers on Wordpress including the DS parent community. I love the diversity of my blog list and contacts- and that I didn't invite or even let anyone I knew IRL that I had a blog until this past year. I have never sought fame or readers. Accumulate readers by reading and commenting - no search engines. I've stalled for awhile but consider returning.

One post (that you wrote) that makes you laugh?
Oh Goodie, The F-Bomb?

One post you are really proud of, for whatever reason?
My two top read posts are
Plugging Out...Plugging In
Who Makes the Decision about Who is Normal?

How have you seen your blog/blogging style change and how would you like to see it develop?
The more you write the better you get. Evolves from writing for me, audience, then me again. I like the photos that enhance writing.

Two blogs you love to read and why?
For stunning writing that leaves you with new parts of your heart discovered (but not for the faint of heart or light reading):
Sweet and Salty  aka Kate Inglis-from Nova Scotia, author of a fascinating kids book and one of the original Shutter Sisters as well as a cofounder of Glow in the Woods ( for mothers who have lost children), also -  In Search of White Space who's author is so searching for egolessness  through poetry and photos that she closes down her writing periodically if she accumulates too many readers! But I have 30ish top blogs in my reader and many of you are now FB friends ~
so many I can't list..... don't feel bad if I've left you out please because they asked for 2
